Finding a basketball that can handle regular outdoor play while still providing a comfortable grip and dependable bounce can make a big difference. The Spalding Highlight Rubber Basketball available through Academy Sports & Outdoors is designed with those needs in mind. It combines a durable rubber cover, responsive construction, raised seams, and bright graphics to create a practical option for driveway games, playground sessions, and casual practice.
Academy Sports & Outdoors currently lists the Spalding Highlight Rubber Basketball at $24.99, with size options including 27.5, 28.5, and 29.5 inches depending on availability.
Built for Outdoor Courts
Outdoor basketball courts can be much harder on a ball than polished indoor floors. Asphalt and concrete can quickly wear down materials that are intended mainly for indoor use. The Highlight Rubber Basketball is built around a performance rubber cover designed to withstand these tougher surfaces.
According to Academy’s product information, the rubber cover is intended to provide durability while maintaining a soft feel. That combination is useful for players who want a ball that feels comfortable in the hands without sacrificing outdoor durability.
For driveway basketball, neighborhood games, school playgrounds, and recreational courts, this type of construction makes practical sense.
Responsive Bounce for Better Practice
A basketball needs more than a durable exterior. Its internal construction also affects how consistently it bounces during dribbling, passing, and shooting.
The Spalding Highlight features a responsive core designed to provide reliable bounce. A consistent bounce can make basic practice more enjoyable because players can develop a rhythm without constantly adjusting to unpredictable ball behavior.
This can be particularly useful for beginners who are learning fundamental skills such as crossover dribbling, chest passes, bounce passes, and basic shooting.
Raised Seams Improve Control
Grip is another important consideration when choosing an outdoor basketball. A smooth or poorly textured surface can become difficult to control, particularly when players are moving quickly.
The Highlight Rubber Basketball uses raised stitching or seams to help provide controlled handling. Academy describes the raised seams as helping with maximum control.
That feature can be helpful during dribbling exercises and quick changes of direction. Players can use the channels and seams as reference points when positioning their fingers, making the ball easier to manage during practice.
Bright Design With a Fun Twist
One feature that makes the Highlight model different from a basic orange outdoor basketball is its visual design. The ball uses bright colored foil graphics, with the listed model featuring black and bright green styling. Academy also notes that the colored foil is designed to glow in the dark.
This gives the basketball a more distinctive appearance and can add extra entertainment to evening play. While the design does not replace important performance characteristics, it can make the ball more appealing to younger players and recreational users.
Available Sizes
Choosing the correct basketball size is important because different players and age groups may be more comfortable with different dimensions. Academy lists the Highlight Rubber Basketball in 27.5-inch, 28.5-inch, and 29.5-inch options, although availability can vary.
Here is a simple overview:

Who Should Consider It?
The Highlight Rubber Basketball is a good choice for people who primarily play basketball outdoors and want something designed to tolerate hard playing surfaces. It can work well for casual players, families, students, recreational athletes, and people practicing their skills at home.
It is also worth considering if appearance matters. The bright graphics and glow-style foil give it more personality than a conventional outdoor basketball.
However, players who spend most of their time on professional or high-level indoor courts may want to consider a basketball specifically designed for indoor play. Outdoor rubber balls prioritize durability, which is particularly useful when dealing with rough surfaces.
How to Keep the Basketball in Good Condition
Even a durable rubber basketball benefits from proper care. Avoid leaving it outside for extended periods, especially during severe weather. Store it in a cool, dry location when it is not being used.
Check the inflation regularly because temperature changes and frequent use can affect the ball’s pressure. Cleaning dirt from the surface can also help preserve its grip and appearance.
Most importantly, use the ball on surfaces appropriate for outdoor basketball. Rough asphalt naturally causes more wear over time, so reasonable maintenance can help extend its usable life.
Final Thoughts
The Academy Sports & Outdoors Highlight Rubber Basketball offers a combination of outdoor durability, dependable bounce, controlled grip, and an eye-catching design. Its performance rubber cover is made for demanding surfaces such as asphalt and concrete, while the responsive core and raised seams support everyday ball handling.
For driveway games, playground basketball, casual competition, and regular outdoor practice, it provides a balanced set of features. The availability of multiple sizes also makes it easier to choose an option that suits different players. If you want an outdoor basketball that combines practical construction with a distinctive appearance, the Highlight model is worth considering.
